FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHY DO YOU ONLY PUBLISH PLAYS WRITTEN BY PEOPLE OF MARGINALIZED GENDERS?
Playwrights of marginalized genders have been consistently overlooked in the theatre industry, especially those who are not cisgender. We believe in creating more inclusive representation on an educational and community level, so that the majority of the population can view theatre written by people like themselves, for themselves- hence why we are called "By/For Publishing."
I DO NOT SEE MY GENDER REPRESENTED ON YOUR PLATFORM.
Please send us a message through our "Contact" page and we will change this immediately. We want to ensure that playwrights of ALL marginalized genders are represented equally on our platform.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO LICENSE A PLAY?
Rights to production are based on a sliding scale. This creates equitable accessibility; under this model, high school theaters that may have less funding than professional theaters have equal access to produce our plays. This helps us reach our goal of providing access to plays written by people of marginalized genders to the majority of the population. More information can be found on the "Apply for Rights" page.
HOW MUCH DO PLAYWRIGHTS EARN FOR THEIR PLAYS?
We believe in paying artists for their work. Period. That being said, we also have to make money to keep this company running. Playwrights take home 80% of the licensing fee paid by all theaters, as well as a percentage of ticket sale revenue from regional/professional theaters.
WHY DO THE MAJORITY OF THE CHARACTERS HAVE TO BE PEOPLE OF MARGINALIZED GENDERS?
To create more opportunities for actors of marginalized genders, just like we are doing for playwrights.
DO YOU ACCEPT MUSICAL SUBMISSIONS?
Currently no, but check back in the future!
DO YOU SELL PRINTED COPIES OF THE PLAYS?
We do not. This is a future possibility, but we currently send all materials digitally.
CAN I READ A PLAY BEFORE CHOOSING TO PRODUCE IT?
Yes! Please send us a message through our contact page, and we will send you a perusal copy of any script.
CAN I PRODUCE A PLAY WITHOUT PAYING FOR THE RIGHTS?
No. If the cost of rights is a major issue for your theater, please contact us. We want everyone to have access to produce important theatre, but we also have a responsibility to support the artists who wrote the scripts.
CAN I USE A PLAY FOR A CLASS WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT?
Kind of. Despite popular belief, you may not perform a play in its entirety for a non-paying audience, nor parts of a play for a paying audience, without properly obtaining the rights to do so. However, you may perform short scenes (typically three pages or less) for class, or audition monologues for free.
CAN I CHANGE THE WORDS THAT ARE WRITTEN IN THE SCRIPT?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: No, at least not without obtaining written permission from the playwright. You may contact them, or you may contact us and we will contact them, and there is a possibility they may say yes! But, there is also a possibility they may say no, because they wrote the play with very specific dialogue in mind, and changing it does not fit their artistic vision. A lot of creative liberties are often taken in theatre, but changing the script should never be one of them, and is in fact considered copyright infringement.
